Outreach (street work)
Umthombo’s street educators (the Latin American term that describes outreach workers) team identifies children on the streets, builds a relationship of trust with them, provides around basic needs but also engages with them around alternatives to living on the streets. Listening to the children is the starting point of good outreach work.
The street educators run street-based engagement programmes but also encourage the children to come to Umthombo’s Safespace for more in-depth services.
Umthombo’s street educators are child and youth-care workers and are guided by the social working team. They work across the City of Durban. Many of Umthombo’s street educators are themselves former street children.
